The Austrian Paper Industry Federation, to which all major paper producing companies are members, sponsors an annual contest promoting the creative use of paper in the printing process. This contest, called Printissimo, is an open challenge to leading printers, advertising agencies and other companies exhibiting creative flair to compete against each other in a creative battle. Hundreds of entries are sent to Vienna, where a judging panel consisting of art directors, paper specialists and printers, decide on the winners.

The competition has several categories, but the major and most important section is “Art”, in which the use of paper and creativity shall result in a piece of art.

In 2005, Karelia Tobacco Company submitted its Trierenberg Supercircuit book named “Smoke” into the “Art” category. It was awarded a Printissimo Award and the judging panel’s statement noted:

“A clear text accompanying the marvellous images from around the globe make the book a pleasure to read again and again. The use of different kinds of glossy and matted varnish gave the images a three-dimensional quality, not seen on any entry in the Printissimo in such perfection before. Paper, design and final production of the “Smoke” book are a rare example of a symbiosis of perfection.”
